He was a Russian Soviet weight lifter. During his professional sport career he won two Olympic gold medals (in Melbourne (1956) and in Rome (1960) and was the first Soviet light-heavyweight lifter to win the world championship. He won also bronze medal in Helsinki (1952). In the last years of his career he became a member of the International Weightlifting Federation Hall of fame. Vorobyov died on December 22, 2012.
